GIS = Geographic Information Systems

A GIS is computer mapping software that links information about where things are with information about what things are like. Unlike with a paper map that can only show a limited amount of information, a GIS map can combine many layers of information. GIS enables you to click on a map on the computer and discover detailed information about the spot you clicked. Or, you can add or remove map layers to make customized maps that reveal patterns based on geography.
